Charleston RiverDogs Take 4-1 Victory Over the Rome Braves in Sally League Action
Monday, June 8, 2009 at 01:31AM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com-CHARLESTON, SC – Charleston starter Manny Banuelos limited Rome to one run and David Adams drove home a pair of runs as the RiverDogs chopped the Braves, 4-1, in South Atlantic League action Sunday in front of 3,954 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Banuelos (4-2) earned his third consecutive win as he held the Braves to six hits while walking one and striking out four in a season-high 5.2 innings pitched.
Charleston remains in first place in the Southern Division standings with a 33-23 record as the now third-place Braves fall two games back at 31-25 and Greenville (1.5 back) moves into second place with two weeks remaining in the season’s first half. At 19-8, the RiverDogs own the best home record in the league.
Adams, who led Charleston with four RBI in Saturday night’s contest, had two of the RiverDogs’ eight hits as did Jose Pirela.
The RiverDogs captured a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Pirela legged out an infield single, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Adams’ RBI single to left.
Charleston extended its 4-0 advantage in the third when Chase Weems drew a leadoff walk and Pirela slapped a single that advanced Weems to second. Brewer blasted a double to left to drive home Weems as Pirela dashed to third. A balk on Rome starter Randall Delgado (1-6) brought home Pirela and moved Brewer to third. Adams followed with a sacrifice fly to center that plated Brewer for the third run of the inning.
Rome cracked the scoreboard in the top of the fourth when Gerry Rodriguez singled up the middle, advanced to second on a wild pitch and sprinted home on Calvin Culver’s single to center to make the score 4-1.
Charleston reliever Pat Venditte, professional baseball’s lone ambidextrous pitcher, silenced Rome’s bats in the ninth to earn his league-leading 18th save. Venditte followed Casey Erickson, who threw 2.1 frames and fanned one of the seven batters he faced.
Delgado, who suffered the loss, was marked for four earned runs on six hits and five walks while striking out six in 4.2 innings.
The Braves recorded only six hits with Jahdiel Santamaria collecting a team-high two.
Charleston looks to sweep Rome in Monday’s series finale set for 7:05 p.m., as the RiverDogs turn to right-hander Brett Marshall (3-3, 3.93 ERA) while the Braves oppose with righty J.J. Hoover (2-1, 2.96 ERA).
