Emergency Start No Problem for Dayton Dragons in Victory Over the Great Lakes Loons

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com-Andrew Bowman, pressed into emergency duty on the mound, threw five no-hit innings, striking out seven, and the Dayton Dragons defeated the Great Lakes Loons 3-2 Sunday in front of 5,057 fans at Dow Diamond. Many of the fans were youngsters in attendance for the pre-game Youth Clinic, presented by Farm Bureau Insurance.

JonMichael Redding hurled a scoreless top of the first with light showers falling, but in the middle of the first the rainfall fell heavier, forcing a rain delay. Right-hander J.C. Sulbaran was listed as the starting pitcher. He warmed up before the delay and was unable to continue when play resumed.

Bowman entered in “relief” of Sulbaran, who never actually threw a pitch, and did not allow a hit in five innings. The Loons’ first hit came in the sixth against reliever Jordan Hotchkiss – a leadoff single by Dee Gordon. He stole second and scored on a single by Jaime Pedroza to pull the Loons to within one.

The Loons tied the game at 2-all in the seventh on an RBI double by Esteban Lopez, his second hit of the season. On the play, Matt Wallach was thrown out at the plate trying to score the go-ahead run.

In the top of the eighth, Dayton took the lead on an RBI single by Cody Puckett against Jordan Pratt (1-3), who was charged with the loss. Junior Martinez (1-0), who surrendered the game-tying hit to Lopez, was the beneficiary of the win.

The game was played in two hours, 43 minutes plus a one hour, 35 minute rain delay.

The Loons and Dragons continue their four-game series Monday evening on Great Lakes Bay Region Night, presented by Michigan Works!. Game time is 7:05pm and tickets are available at Loons.com. Right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (1-4, 5.79 ERA) will start for the Loons against right-hander Oscar Castro (2-2, 6.59).
