Kannapolis Intimidators Take Both Games of Doubleheader from the West Virginia Power

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com-Kannapolis, NC (June 7, 2009)– The Kannanpolis Intimidators came from behind twice in Sunday’s double header at FieldCrest Cannon Stadium and took both ends of the double header, winning both games in their final at-bat, defeating the Power 5-4 in game one and 3-2 in game two.

Kannapolis took an early 2-0 lead in the first game before mounting their comeback in the seventh inning. Eduardo Escobar doubled in Tyler Kuhn in the second inning and scored on a base hit from Sergio Morales. The Power tied the game with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Robbie Grossman belted a two-out RBI single and Greg Picart scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Jeremy Farrell scored the go ahead run in the sixth inning on Austin McClune’s two-out single and Farrell plated an insurance run with a two-out base hit in the seventh.

The two-run lead was not enough, as the Intimidators came from behind and won in their final at-bat for the second time in the series. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, Yoffri Martinez walked the next two batters and surrendered an RBI double to Seth Loman. Owen Brolsma replaced Martinez with two outs, and runners on second and third. A wild pitch allowed Morales to score the tying run and Jon Gilmore belted an RBI single into left-center field to plate the winning run.

West Virginia built a two run lead in game two, plating both of their runs in the fourth inning. Calvin Anderson reached on a fielder’s choice, allowing Quincy Latimore to score and Marcus Davis belted an RBI single to score Chase D’Arnaud. Zach Larson’s groundout plated Jon Gilmore for Kannapolis in the sixth inning. The Intimidators were down to their final strike in the bottom of the seventh when Tyler Kuhn’s single to left field scored Justin Greene to tie the game. Kannapolis executed a squeeze to win the game in the eighth. Greene laid the bunt down and Sergio Morales scored the winning run.

In game one Leroy Hunt (1-1) threw one pitch to retire the only batter he faced and earned the victory while Yoffri Martinez (4-4) allowed three runs on a hit with three walks over an inning and two-thirds and suffered the loss. Kevin Asselin (1-0) tossed three scoreless innings in game two to get the win and Eddie Pena (1-4) was tagged with the loss. Brian Leach started the second game and tossed four scoreless innings for the Power.

West Virginia is 21-35 after the losses, and the Intimidators are 30-27 with the wins. Erik Huber reached four times during the double header, and went 2-for-3 in the first game. Robbie Grossman had three hits on the afternoon and six in the series. 15 out of West Virginia’s last 17 games have been decided by two runs or less. They are 7-10 during that stretch. West Virginia had leads of larger than two runs in each of the four games they lost in the series. They lost three in Kannapolis’s final at-bat.
