Luis Nunez Helps Lead Clinton LumberKings To 4-2 Win Over Quad Cities River Bandits

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -Davenport, IA – A hero the previous night with a single and the game-winning run scored in the 14th, Luis Nunez was at it again Sunday night at Modern Woodmen Park, singling to open the 10th inning and scoring on a throwing error by pitcher Dave Carpenter as the Clinton LumberKings edged the Quad Cities River Bandits, 4-2.

Nunez went 3-for-4, scoring two of Clinton’s four runs. After he reached with a liner to right to open the 10th, Jake Shaffer placed a bunt perfectly down the third-base line for an infield single. Carpenter (L, 2-2) fired wide of first base, and as two Bandits’ defenders scrambled for the ball in the LumberKings’ bullpen, Nunez raced around to score for a 3-2 lead.

Scott Savastano added insurance with a liner to right, plating Shaffer for a 4-2 lead. Closer Ruben Flores (S, 9) then came on in the bottom of the 10th, working around a two-out walk to save the game for the second-straight night.

The LumberKings saw their 1-0 lead evaporate in the seventh inning as starter Kenn Kasparek gave up a double to Paul Cruz and a single to Frederick Parejo. Ryan Moorer was called on from the bullpen, but walked the bases loaded and then issued a bases-loaded walk to Niko Vasquez to tie the game. Guillermo Toribio added a sac fly to left, scoring Parejo for a 2-1 River Bandits’ lead.

The Kings would answer back in the eighth inning as Nunez reached on a leadoff single against Adam Veres. After a single by Shaffer moved him to second, Denny Almonte singled through the left side with two outs to send him home for a 2-2 score.

Andres Esquibel (W, 1-1) kept the game tied with a scoreless ninth inning. He allowed just one hit.

The win gives the LumberKings a four-game winning streak. Clinton has won in their last at-bat in all four games, including extra-inning battles in three of the four (also on Thursday against Kane County, 5-4 win in 10 innings).

The LumberKings (30-26) continue the four-game series with the Quad Cities River Bandits (25-30) tomorrow night. First pitch from Modern Woodmen Park is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at www.kcln.com.
