Portland Beavers Even Series with the Reno Aces with 6-4 Win

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com-PORTLAND, Ore. – Eliezer (eh-lee-AY-zur) Alfonzo was 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, Mike Baxter highlighted a four-run seventh with a two-run double and the Portland Beavers rallied past the Reno Aces 6-4 before 5,183 Sunday afternoon at PGE Park.

With the game tied 2-2, the Beavers (29-29) rattled off four straight hits to start the bottom of the seventh. Following a double from Chad Huffman and a single by Alfonzo, Peter Ciofrone started the scoring with a single to left, Matt Antonelli added a pinch-hit, RBI double, and Baxter laced a two-run double to right.

The Beavers out-hit the Aces 11-7 and evened the four-game series at a game apiece.

Josh Banks gave up a two-run homer in the fourth, but was otherwise sharp in his seventh start of the season for Portland. Banks (4-3), who entered the game ranked sixth in the league with a 2.64 ERA, struck out five and held the Aces (26-32) to two runs and just four hits across seven innings, his longest outing of the year.

Alfonzo homered for a third straight game, giving the Beavers the lead in the second with a solo shot, and later tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.

Reno starter Hector Ambriz (1-4) struck out a season-high eight batters but gave up five runs and nine hits over six-plus innings in the losing cause.

Former Beaver Luke Carlin’s two-run homer off the batter’s eye in straightaway center gave Reno a 2-1 lead that lasted until the seventh.

Eulogio De La Cruz gave up a run in the ninth but struck out two to pick up his second save for Portland.

The Beavers and Aces meet in the third game of their series Monday night at 7:05 p.m.

NOTES: The Beavers are 8-2 when Alfonzo hits a home run ... Craig Stansberry singled in the first inning, pushing his current hitting streak to 15 games, the longest by a Portland batter in 2009 ... Banks has a 0.96 ERA (3er, 28.0ip) in eight appearances (3 starts) at PGE Park this season ... De La Cruz issued two wild pitches in the ninth.
