Appleton, WI – It took six tries, but finally the Clinton LumberKings found a way to win at Time Warner Cable Field in Appleton, Wisconsin. Nate Tenbrink’s RBI single plated Scott Savastano in the eighth for a 3-2 lead, and an error by catcher Corey Kemp sent Kris Sanchez home as the LumberKings won, 4-2 over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.
Terry Serrano tripled and scored on a groundout by Savastano in the third inning to tie the score at 1-1, and the Kings took a 2-1 lead in the fourth as Denny Almonte singled, stole second and later scored on a sac fly by Blake Ochoa.
Wisconsin tied the score on a crucial error in the sixth. After Kemp reached on a one-out single against right-hander Matt Renfree, John Delaney sent a tough chopper to third base. Savastano made a backhanded stab, but then threw the ball away from Sanchez at first. Kemp came around to score, knotting the game at 2-2. Renfree (W, 1-0) was still in a jam, but stranded Delaney at third, striking out Brock Kjeldgaard and getting Jose Duran to ground out to second.
Still tied 2-2 in the eighth, Savastano reached after being hit by a pitch. Sanchez then drew a walk, and two batters later, Tenbrink sent a liner into right. Savastano was waved around to score, just ahead of Michael Vass’s throw to the plate. Kemp then attempted to nab Tenbrink taking an extra base, but his throw to second instead landed in center. Sanchez scored on the play, making it 4-2.
Right-hander Cheyne Hann (H, 5) worked a perfect bottom of the eighth, and closer Ruben Flores (S, 15) pitched out of a two-on, one-out jam in the bottom of the ninth. He got Vass to fly out to deep right-center as Almonte tracked it down for a game-saving catch, then struck out Juan Sanchez to end the game.
Right-hander Liam Ohlmann (L, 2-3) took the loss for the Timber Rattlers, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit over 3.2 innings.
Tenbrink finished 1-for-4 with the RBI, his 35th of the season. Serrano had two of Clinton’s four hits, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
