High Desert Mavericks Beat San Jose Giants 3-1 - California League

San Jose - Clayton Tanner limited High Desert to one run over seven innings and the San Jose Giants completed a three-game sweep of the Mavericks with a 3-1 victory on Thursday night at Municipal Stadium.  Tanner struck out eight and allowed just three hits before Daniel Turpen and Dan Runzler each tossed a scoreless inning of relief to seal the Giants victory.  The win, San Jose’s fifth in a row, improved the Giants’ overall record to 54-31 – tops in the California League.

Tanner (7-3) began his outing by setting down the first 10 High Desert batters that came to the plate before surrendering a solo homer to Kuo Hui Lo in the top of the fourth inning.  Tanner walked just one during his stint on the mound and threw a total of 96 pitches.  Turpen (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) did not allow a run in the eighth before Runzler (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) struck out a pair in the ninth to earn his second save with the Giants.

San Jose took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning against Mavericks starting pitcher Jake Wild.  With one out, Darren Ford began the rally with a bunt single.  After Brian Bocock was hit by a pitch, Thomas Neal ripped a double into the left field corner to score Ford giving the Giants a 2-1 lead.  However on the play, Bocock was thrown out at the plate attempting to score a second run.

Buster Posey’s followed Neal’s hit with a line drive RBI single into left center field extending the San Jose lead to 3-1.

Wild (4-5) tossed his second complete game of the season, but suffered the tough-luck loss for High Desert.  Wild yielded five hits and three runs (two earned) over eight innings.  The right-hander walked one and struck out four while throwing only 89 pitches.

The Giants scored their first run of the contest in the bottom of the third inning as consecutive one-out singles from Nick Noonan and Ryan Lormand set up the rally.  Ford then hit a ground ball to shortstop that was fielded by Jeffrey Dominguez, however his throw to third in an attempt to force out Noonan bounced past third baseman Alex Liddi and into foul territory.  The error allowed Noonan to score giving San Jose a 1-0 lead.

The Mavericks tied the score on Lo’s solo homer in the fourth and threatened to take the lead in the top of the sixth.  With two outs, Tyson Gillies reached on an infield single before Lo was safe on a throwing error committed by Lormand at third.  However, Tanner recovered to strikeout Joe Dunigan stranding runners at first and second keeping the score deadlocked at 1-1.

After the Giants took back the lead, Tanner worked through a two-out walk in the top of the seventh to keep High Desert off the scoreboard.  In the eighth, Travis Scott drew a leadoff walk while facing Turpen, but Dominguez followed by grounding into a 6-4-3 double play.  Gillies then singled, however Turpen struck out Lo on three pitches to end the inning.

In the top of the ninth, Dunigan led off by reaching on an error, but Runzler struck out the next two hitters, Carlos Peguero and Liddi, before Ian Bladergroen grounded out to second completing the game.

The Giants out-hit the Mavericks by a 5-4 margin.  No San Jose player finished the contest with more than one hit.
