Tennessee Smokies Walloped by the Montgomery Biscuits 15-1

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com-SEVIERVILLE, Tenn.–Casey Coleman came into Friday night’s game against the Montgomery Biscuits looking for his Southern League-leading 10thvictory of the 2009 season. Having won five of his last six starts and sporting a 9-1 record in night games this year, it was as good a night as any for the Tennessee Smokies to get their first win of this week’s series.

It wasn’t meant to be. A four-run first by Montgomery was a harbinger of unfortunate things to come for the Smokies as they lost 15-1 to the Biscuits in front of 5,292 at Smokies Park. With the loss Tennessee falls to 8-11 in the season’s second half, 40-49 overall.

The Biscuits were on fire to start the game. Four consecutive singles off Coleman (9-4) with one out in the first drove in two Montgomery runs. A Nevin Ashley double brought in a third run and Joe Gaetti’s sacrifice fly made it 4-0 Montgomery in the first.

Tennessee’s Ty Wright led off the second with a solo home run to left off Biscuits starter Heath Rollins, cutting Montgomery’s lead to 4-1. It was the outfielder’s fifth home run of the year and Rollins only blemish in his seven-inning masterpiece. Rollins (8-7) scattered five hits over those seven innings, walking two and striking out two.

Montgomery responded to Wright’s home run with three runs in the fourth to chase Coleman from the game. Coleman would last only 3.1 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits, walking two and striking out one.

Tennessee relievers Alex Maestri and Brian Schlitter tamed the Biscuits over the next 3.2 innings, combining to allow only one run on four hits. Montgomery would get to Marco Carrillo though as they roughed him up in the eighth for five runs, largely due to a Joe Gaetti three-run home run.

With the score now 13-1, Smokies manager Ryne Sandberg inserted 1B Blake Lalli into the game in a relief role. Two more Montgomery runs would put Montgomery up 15-1 to round out the score.
