Arkansas Travelers Fall 4-3 To Frisco RoughRiders In 10 Innings

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -FRISCO, TEXAS – The Arkansas Travelers saw their three-game win streak come to an end on Sunday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark dropping a ten-inning affair to the Frisco RoughRiders by a 4-3 score.Frisco catcher Manny Pina doubled to drive in the winning run helping the Riders to their sixth straight win over the Travelers. The Travs came from behind in the ninth inning thanks to a two-run homer from catcher Flint Wipke to take a 3-2 lead, but Wipke committed a throwing error giving Frisco the tying run in the ninth inning to set up extras.

The Travs faced left handed pitcher Kasey Kiker for the third time this season.Over his previous two outings, Kiker held the Travs to two base hits over 13 innings.Arkansas had a bit more success against him this time around scoring one run over his six innings on four hits and two walks.Kiker retired the last 11 batters he faced and struck out six.

Arkansas right hander Amailo Diaz was given a spot start with left hander Barret Browning moved back to the bullpen.Making his first start since June 12, Diaz held Frisco to one run over five innings on five hits, two walks and four strikeouts.

The Travs tallied the first run scoring off Kiker in the third inning.Hainley Statia hit a leadoff single and advanced to second base on a slow groundout to the mound.Mark Trumbo chopped a pitch fair down the first base line to score Statia for a 1-0 lead.

Frisco got a leadoff double in the bottom of the third from Craig Gentry, who finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored.Dustin Majewski moved Gentry to third base with a bouncer to first, then with Tim Smith batting Diaz threw a wild pitch that bounced far enough away to allow Gentry to score the tying run.

Diaz handed the ball to right hander Ryan Aldridge for the bottom of the sixth inning. He got two quick outs, but Guilder Rodriguez reached when his flare fell in front of Statia who was playing deep up the middle for an infield single.Marcus Lemon swatted the next pitch to the warning track in right field for a go-ahead double.

The Travs threatened Frisco reliever Brennan Garr in the seventh as Chris Gutierrez hit a leadoff single followed by a walk to Jay Caligiuri.Wipke sacrificed to advance the runners, but Garr struck out Peter Bourjos and got Statia to bounce to first base.

Garr threw a scoreless eighth inning and gave way to right hander Beau Vaughan (W, 2-0) for the ninth.Caligiuri stroked a one-out single to center and was replaced by Ivan Contreras on the bases.Wipke fell behind 0-1 before launching a line drive over the left-field fence for a go-ahead homer and a 3-2 Travs lead.

Arkansas had Bobby Cassevah pitch the eighth inning and he retired the first two batters of Frisco’s ninth.Once again an infield single kept the frame alive and Gentry beat out a chopper over the mount.Cassevah then walked Majewski on four pitches putting the potential winning run on first base. With Smith batting, Cassevah bounced a pitch that Wipke blocked. As Gentry ran for third base, Wipke attempted to throw out Majewski at second but bounced the ball into center field allowing the tying run to score on the club’s second error.Cassevah got Smith to bounce out to send the game to the tenth.

Vaughan retired the side in the order in the top of the tenth, and Frisco immediately got the winning run on base against Marco Albano (L, 1-4) when Mitch Moreland singled. The Travs’ third wild pitch of the night moved Moreland to second base, then John Whittleman walked on four pitches. With one out Pina, 0-for-3 at this point, hit a hard grounder fair and down the third-base line to score the winning run.

The Travs fall to 2-8 against the RoughRiders and are 3-9 in extra inning games.

Time of game was 3:13 and the paid attendance was 5,902.

The second game of the series is set for 7:00 p.m. on Monday.Arkansas has right hander Jordan Walden (1-5, 4.95) pitching against Frisco lefty Michael Kirkman (2-4, 3.80).
