Hudson Valley Renegades Power Past Aberdeen IronBirds 14-10 - NYP

(ABERDEEN, MD) The Aberdeen Ironbirds scored eight runs in the first two innings, but couldn’t maintain the lead as the ‘Birds  fell in a 14-10 loss to the Hudson Valley Renegades in 12 innings as Tyler Kelly ties a franchise record with five hits.

Tyler Townsend lit the fuse in this contest for Aberdeen, hitting a two-run homerun in the second inning off Doug Salinas that scored Tyler Kelly and Levi Carolus. Townsend finished hitting 2-5 with two runs, a homerun and three RBIs. Tyler Kelly stole the show, hitting 5-5 with three runs, a homerun and tying Arturo Rivas’ franchise record for hits in a game.

Hudson Valley’s Kyle Ayers could not get out of the first inning, surrendering four runs on two hits and walking three after only pitching 0.2 innings. The ‘Birds took advantage of Ayers’ shaky start to take an early 4-1 lead.  Salinas came in to close out the first for the Renegades. Salinas provided 2.1 innings of relief allowing four runs on six hits.

Colin Allen started off the first two innings strong but gave up four runs to the Renegades in the third inning. Allen was pulled in the fourth inning after allowing a run that cut the Ironbirds to an 8-6 lead over the Renegades. Allen finished with six runs on seven hits and one walk after throwing 3.2 innings. Procner relieved Allen in the fourth. Procner compiled 2.1 innings pitched, giving up three runs on five hits.

The twelfth inning belong to the Renegades where they scored three runs to clinch the game.

The ‘Birds also tied the franchise record for combined hits in a game at 34. The record was set July 31, 2005 at Jamestown.

Hudson Valley’s Eli Sonoqui dueled Townsend and Kelly in this offensive feast. Sonoqui finished hitting 3-5 with two runs, two homeruns and two RBIs.

Kelly and Townsend’s supporting cast deserve noting as well. Five Ironbirds had multi-hit games: Michael Mooney, Tyler Kelly and Justin Dalles joining Townsend in accomplishing the feat.

Meanwhile, Hudson Valley compiled five players with multi-hit games as well. The list included Christopher Murrill, Burt Reynolds, Mark Thomas and Mayo Acosta joining Sonoqui.

Both starters gave up four runs but neither received a decision. Zachary Quante got the win, while Mick Mattaliano went home with the loss.

Tomorrow the ‘Birds will wrap up a two game homestand with the Hudson Valley Renegades which is scheduled for 5:35.
