TACOMA, Wash. – Callix Crabbe went 4-for-4 with two homers, a double and five RBIs and Jerry Owens went 3-for-3 and scored three times as the Tacoma Rainiers beat the Portland Beavers 8-3 Saturday night at Cheney Stadium.
Crabbe, who entered the game with just one home run in 65 games for the Rainiers (43-46) this season, took Beavers starter Walter Silva (3-3) deep in the first and added a two-run shot off John Hudgins in the seventh. Adam Moore also went deep and Jeff Clement added a two-run double.
Chad Huffman had three hits and Peter Ciofrone contributed two hits, one of them a two-run single, as the Beavers (42-48) matched a season high by stranding 15 runners on base.
Tacoma starter Doug Fister scattered seven hits and two walks across five innings and allowed just one run to move to 5-2 on the season.
Silva, who returned to the Beavers’ rotation Saturday after two weeks with the Padres, surrendered six runs on 10 hits (2 home runs) in six innings of work.
Crabbe’s first-inning homer gave the Rainiers a quick, 1-0 lead.
Tacoma added three in the third with an RBI single by Crabbe and Clement’s two-run double.
Portland got one back in the fourth when Danny Putnam was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Val Pascucci.
Crabbe’s RBI double in the fifth and Moore’s solo shot in the sixth put Tacoma up 6-1.
Ciofrone drove in Drew Macias and Huffman in the seventh with a single to left but the Beavers gave the runs right back in the bottom half of the inning on Crabbe’s second homer of the night.
