West Tenn Diamond Jaxx Edge Mobile BayBears 4-3 - Southern League

JACKSON, Tenn. – Johan Limonta’s walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth off Scott Maine broke a 3-3 tie and handed the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx the season series over the BayBears with a 4-3 victory on Saturday night at Pringles Park.

Limonta’s knock came just after a wild pitch by Maine (2-3) allowed Marshall Hubbard to advance to third with the winning run. Hubbard sparked the ninth-inning rally with a one-out single while taking second on a walk to Mike Wilson.

The contest had been tied from the fifth inning on when Pete Clifford evened the score at 3-3 on an inside-the-park home run. Clifford drove the ball to deep center against starter Steve Bray while Greg Halman went back and had the ball smack off his glove. Halman injured himself when running into the wall and couldn’t recover as Clifford circled the bases.

It had been a see-saw battle through that point. West Tenn (41-49, 14-6) claimed the lead initially with a two-out, broken-bat single by Wilson in the first that brought Mel Stocker home. Ricardo Sosa blasted his 10th home run of the season against Bray in the second to tie the score at 1-1.

Cody Evans was sharp through six innings as he surrendered three runs on seven hits. He let the Jaxx have the lead back in the second as Matt Mangini singled home Travis Garcia. Matt Tupman’s RBI double in the fourth brought Bryan Byrne to the dish, but Sean Coughlin was cut down trying to score from first which would have given the BayBears (47-42, 10-9) the lead. West Tenn quickly took the advantage back in the bottom of the fourth with a run-scoring triple by Mangini.

Ricky Orta (3-1) was solid out of the Jaxx pen with 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Ramon Sanchez worked a scoreless seventh while Maine was perfect in the eighth before his ninth-inning trouble. Mark Hallberg also left the game with an injury as an errant relay throw nailed him in the back of the head, but he seemed to be fine as he walked off the field on his own power.

The Mobile BayBears have sent nearly 100 players to the major leagues. They return home on Wednesday, July 15 to take on the Birmingham Barons at 7:05 p.m. For Hank Aaron Stadium tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
