Augusta GreenJackets Crush West Virginia Power, 8-2

 

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -Augusta, GA (July 15, 2009) – The Augusta GreenJackets scored early and often, plating runs in three out of the first four innings of Wednesday night’s game at Lake Olmstead Stadium and despite being out hit 8-7, still came away with an 8-2 victory over the West Virginia Power to take the third game of the series.

 

The GreenJackets took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Francisco Peguero scored on Ehire Adrianza’s groundout. Wendell Fairley belted a two-out double in the bottom of the second to plate two more runs, giving the GreenJackets a 3-0 lead. West Virginia plated their first run in the top of the fourth inning. Adenson Chourio walked with two outs, moved to second on Quincy Latimore’s base hit and Robbie Grossman brought Chourio home with a run scoring single.

 

Augusta plated their next two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Rafael De Los Santos walked Fairley with the bases loaded to plate the first run and Peguero reached on a fielder’s choice to score Juan Perez. West Virginia plated their final run when Danny Bomback singled Austin McClune home in the seventh inning. The GreenJackets put the icing on the cake in the seventh inning when Josh Mazzolo hit a three-run shot off of Duke Welker to put the game out of reach.

 

Eric Surkamp (6-4) struck out eight batters over six innings while allowing just two runs on seven hits in a winning effort. Rafael De Los Santos (0-3) was tagged for five runs on five hits, while walking four over four innings and suffered the loss. Casey Erickson retired six out of the seven batters he faced and fanned four in the two innings he pitched. The GreenJackets recorded 15 strikeouts on the night.

 

West Virginia fell to 38-50 overall, and 11-7 in the second half after the loss, while the GreenJackets improved to 46-43 overall and 11-9 in the second half after the win. One night after his 28 game on base streak came to an end, Robbie Grossman turned in a two-hit performance, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Josue Peley had a pair of base hits as well. Austin McClune led off the seventh inning with a double, which was West Virginia’s first extra-base hit of the series. Jeremy Farrell belted a single in the second inning to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and his on base streak to 17.

 

West Virginia will finish the four game series against the Augusta GreenJackets at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Thursday night. The Power will start right hander Brian Leach (3-0, 1.67) and the GreenJackets will counter with left hander Ari Ronick (6-4, 2.78). The first pitch will be delivered at 7:05 PM.
