Shirek only walked two in the contest, but the second free pass came to start the eighth asMark Hallbergreached. With one away,Pedro Ciriacobunted for a base hit and both men advanced on a passed ball byJared Price.Bryan Byrnepopped out to leave both men in scoring position with two outs before Sosa's heroics.
Birmingham(60-30, 12-9) grabbed their 2-1 advantage in the fifth whenJordan Dankscracked his fifth home run of the season offWes Roemer. Roemer also allowed a run in the fourth as the Barons tied the score at 1-1 with a two-out, RBI single fromC.J. Retherford. Aside from that, Roemer was strong as he lasted through seven frames while scattering six hits and fanning six.
