Myrtle Beach Pelicans Match Longest Streak of Season with Win Over the Wilmington Blue Rocks

 

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com-WILMINGTON, DE – The Pelicans needed some late inning heroics to claim their fourth straight victory over the Wilmington Blue Rocks and third straight overall Wednesday night at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, DE. The win matches the Pelicans' longest winning streak of the season of three games, which has happened on two other occasions.

 

The Pelicans got the bats cranked up early with a record tying knock byCody Johnson. After a two-out single byDonell Linaresin the first inning, Johnson tied former PelicanMike Hessmanfor the organization's single season home run lead with his 23rdblast of the season.

 

In the bottom of the inning the Blue Rocks answered the call.Derrick Robinsonsingled and stole his 41stbase of the year, and got tripled home a batter later byJohnny Giavotella. Giavotella came home on a groundout to second base by the next batter to tie the game at two.

Leading off the top of the second,Gerry Rodriguezpromptly blasted his second home run of the season to break the 2-2 tie. The Pelicans added another run in the top of the sixth to go up two whenCole Milesscored from third on a sacrifice fly to center field by Linares to put the Birds up 4-2.

 

The Blue Rocks got even in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of runs.Anthony Seratellicame home with the first run on a base hit byRyan Eigsti. A batter later, the Blue Rocks would even the game up at four when Eigsti scored from third on a throwing error from right fielderChris ShehanafterAdrian Ortizsingled.

 

The game stayed even at four until the Pelicans plated two in the ninth. With Linares at second and Rodriguez at first,Jesus Sucretripled offPaulo Orlando'sglove in the right field corner to drive home both base runners and give the Pelicans a 6-4 lead. The Blue Rocks pulled within one with a run offPatrick Currinin the bottom of the ninth but the Pelicans held on for the 6-5 win.

 

Myrtle Beach starterJose Orteganowent five innings, his longest start since returning from the disabled list, and allowed just two runs on four hits. He struck out three without walking a batter but didn't get a decision. Currin (1-0) got the win pitching the final two and two-thirds innings allowing just one run on two hits.KelvinVilla(2-6) suffered his second loss of the series allowing the two ninth inning runs in his second inning of work. He walked one and struck out three in the losing effort.

 

The Pelicans go for their first series sweep of the season Thursday night at Frawly Stadium in Wilmington. LeftyJacob Thompsonwill start on the hill for Myrtle Beach against right handerJason Godin. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05. The game will close out the series before the Pelicans return home to open a three game series against the Winston-Salem Dash on Saturday night at BB&T Coastal Field. The Zooperstars will be on hand as the Pelicans open a six-game homestand.
