Tennessee Smokies Beat Jacksonville Suns 6-4 - Southern League
Thursday, July 16, 2009 at 10:09PM Jacksonville, FL – Jim Adduci continued his mastery of Southern League pitching Wednesday night as he propelled the Smokies to a 6-4 win over the Suns at the Baseball Ground of Jacksonville. A crowd of over 2,000 saw Tennessee (9-11) overcome an early 2-0 deficit with three runs in the third inning. The loss drops Jacksonville to 13-8 in the second half.
The pivotal inning for Tennessee began with double by Tony Thomas. Following a slashing single by Andrew Cashner, Jonathan Mota brought home Thomas with a hit to left. Jim Adduci then belted his second homerun of the season to stake the Smokies a lead they would not relinquish.
Adduci finished the night with three hits in five plate appearances. He had a single, double and a round-tripper to go along with two RBIs. He also scored three times in the game.
Casey Lambert (6-5) earned the victory in relief, pitching a scoreless two innings. He allowed one base knock while striking out three for a night’s work. The loss was charged to Jacksonville’s starter Nic Ungs (5-2) who allowed five runs on eight hits in five innings on the mound.
Brian Schlitter held the Suns to one run in the ninth inning to earn his 13th save.
Tennessee added some much needed insurance with two runs in the fifth and one in the seventh.
The Suns loaded the bases on Cashner in the first inning. However, the fireballer recovered to limit the damage to an RBI single and sacrifice fly. Cashner allowed the two runs on four hits in four innings of work. He walked two and struck out five. He left the game with the Smokies leading 5-2, but did not qualify for the victory.
