New Britain Rock Cats Defeat Reading Phillies 5-2

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -READING, Pa. -- With Thursday’s 5-2 victory, the New Britain Rock Cats have outscored the Phillies 32-13, outhit them 58-30 and out homered them 10-2 in four games here.

 

It could have been worse: The Cats -- they were 4-for-18 with runners in scoring position -- stranded 15 runners against four pitchers.

 

They are batting .367 against the Phillies, .268 against the rest of the league. They are 4-0 against the Phillies, 43-44 against the rest of the league. They also improved to 26-19 on the road.

The Cats (47-44) jumped on Yohan Flande (0-2, 7.58 ERA) for three first-inning runs, then turned things over to Yohan Pino (5-1) and three relievers, who combined on a six-hitter against the top-hitting team in the league.

 

Luke Hughes homered and knocked in two runs; Toby Gardenhire went 2-for-3 and knocked in three. Steve Singleton doubled twice and went 3-for-5.

 

The Phillies (51-39) scored a run in the fourth on Jeremy Slayden’s sixth home run and another in the sixth on Kevin Mahar’s bloop double to right. Slayden (.368) went 2-for-4 and scored two runs.
