Los Angeles Angels Baseball: Down on the Farm for July 18, 2009

Here’s a look at how the Angels’ farm system fared in yesterday’s action:

SALT LAKE BEES (Class AAA) Pacific Coast League - Record 47-45, 2nd, 4.5GB

The Salt Lake Bees led 4-1 before giving up five runs in the sixth inning of an 8-4 loss to the Portland Beavers (Padres’ affiliate).RHP Mike MacDonald(5-10) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits in 5.1 innings with two walks and five strikeouts. The Bees had eight hits, including two byCF Brad Coon.

ARKANSAS TRAVELERS (Class AA) Texas League - Record 6-12, 4th (28-42, 4th, 10GB)

The Arkansas Travelers, who have lost three straight games, were rained out of their opener with the Tulsa Drillers (Rockies’ affiliate). The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday with two seven-inning contests.

RANCHO CUCAMONGA QUAKES (Class A)California League - Record 9-12, T3rd (30-40, 4th, 13GB)

The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes were limited to just three hits in a 2-1 loss to the Inland Empire 66ers (Dodgers’ affiliate). The Quakes jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI-single by1B Efren Navarrobut were shut down the rest of the way.LHP Jayson Miller(4-6) allowed two runs in the bottom of the first but pitched well the rest of the way, scattering five hits and one walk while striking out seven in seven innings.

CEDAR RAPIDS KERNELS (Class A) Midwest League - Record 14-6, 1st (40-30, 2nd, 1GB)

The first-place Cedar Rapids Kernels broke the game open with a six-run sixth inning and went on to post a 13-6 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (Blue Jays’ affiliate). The Kernels pounded out 16 hits, including a three-run home run by2B Alexi Amarista. C Beau BrooksandCF Tyson Auereach had three hits.RHP Manuarys Correa(6-5) got the win, allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits in five innings.

OREM OWLZ (Rookie) Pioneer League – Record 11-11, 3rd, 2GB

The Orem Owlz lost their second straight to the Billings Mustangs (Reds’ affiliate), falling 6-3. The Owlz led 2-1 before giving up four runs in the seventh inning.RHP T.J. Kelly(0-1) got the loss, allowing all four runs on six hits in 1.2 relief innings. Orem managed just seven hits, including a double and single byC Ikko Sumi.2B Jean Seguraextended his hit streak to 10 games.

TEMPE ANGELS (Rookie) Arizona League- Record 14-7, 1st, 0.5GA

The first-place Tempe Angels got back on the winning track with a 13-5 win over the Indians.DH James Mallardhad two hits, including a home run, and three RBI.1B Eric Oliveralso had two hits and three RBI.LHP Josh Blanco(3-1) started and got the win, allowing five runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in five innings.

DOMINICAN ANGELS (Rookie) Dominican Summer League- Record 19-20, 4th, 9GB

The Angels won 11-3 over the Astros.
