New Orleans Zephyrs Toppled By Albuquerque Isotopes, 12-3

 

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -Albuquerque catcher JD Closser hammered a grand slam and drove in five runs as the Isotopes hammered the Zephyrs 12-3 in front of 11,269 fans at Isotopes Park. Closser’s grand slam gave the Isotopes the lead in the fifth inning.

New Orleans jumped out to a quick start scoring in the first inning on a Michael Ryan sacrifice fly. New Orleans took the lead again in the third inning with a RBI single for Gaby Sanchez. The Z’s lead 2-1 in the 5th inning when the Isotopes loaded the bases against Zephyr starter Hayden Penn. Tim Wood entered the game in relief and Closser drilled the first pitch over the right field wall. The Albuquerque offense was not finished adding seven runs in the 7th to take a 12-3 lead.

Eric Stults earned the win pitching six innings allowing 3 runs off of 8 hits. Hayden Penn suffered the loss working 4.1 innings. Z’s reliever Willie Glen allowed 6 runs in his New Orleans debut.

The Zephyrs have dropped four consecutive games and fall 5 ½ games back of first place Albuquerque.

Game Notes: The Z’s fall to 0-6 at Isotopes Park this season. The Marlins Triple A Affiliate home had been Isotopes Park for the past six seasons. The Z’s have not managed to score more than 3 runs in any of their games during the four game slide.

Coming Up: The Zephyrs and Isotopes meet Saturday at 8:05 in Albuquerque. RH Clay Hensley (5-2, 3.55) will start for New Orleans against RH Charlie Haegar (8-6, 3.74).
