New Hampshire Fisher Cats Take 5-3 Decision From Binghamton Mets

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -Binghamton, NY---Brian Dopirak ripped a bases-loaded double in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game and David Cooper followed with an RBI groundout to put New Hampshire in front and the Fisher Cats went on to a 5-3 win Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium.
Edgar Estanga (3-3) worked a season-high 3.2 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win in relief of Brandon Magee. He allowed one hit and struck out four batters. Danny Farquhar worked around a walk in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn a save, his third, for the second consecutive night.
Binghamton (29-48)opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Caleb Stewart walked and scored on a double down the right field line by Lucas Duda to put the Mets in front 1-0.
In the last of the fourth inning, Stewart was hit by a pitch. D. J. Wabick doubled to right field putting runners on second and third with two outs. Shawn Bowman (2-for-4, 3B, 2B) followed with a double driving in both runners as the Mets opened a 3-0 lead.
The Fisher Cats (34-44) took the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Darin Mastroianni led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He then stole third base and scored on a single to left field by Bryan Kervin (2-for-4, 2 R, RBI) to make it 3-1 in favor of Binghamton. Todd Donovan (2-for-5, R) and Adam Calderone (2-for-3, R, RBI) followed with singles off losing pitcher Eric Brown (4-8). With the bases loaded, Brian Dopirak (1-for-5, 2 RBI) doubled to left center driving in two runs to tie the game and David Cooper followed with an RBI groundout to put New Hampshire in front for the first time at 4-3.
With the hit, Dopirak extended his season-high hit streak to 15 games, one short of the franchise record. He leads the Eastern League with 18 home runs and 60 RBI and was one of three Fisher Cats named today to the Northern Division All-Star team (Brian Jeroloman, Rey Gonzalez).
Brandon Magee started the game for New Hampshire, but left after an apparent injury in the bottom of the fifth inning. He allowed three runs on four hits before leaving with one out, a man at second, and an 0-1 count on Jose Coronado
Binghamton had a good scoring chance in the bottom of the seventh inning. Bowman led off with a triple, but Estanga got Ruben Tejada to pop out and then struck out Salvador Paniagua and Emmanual Garcia to keep the Fisher Cats in front.
New Hampshire added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning. Al Quintana singled, but was erased on a Kervin fielders choice. Donovan singled Kervin to third before Calderone delivered an RBI single off reliever Jim Ed Warden to make the score 5-3.
The series continues on Thursday night with a 7:05pm first pitch at NYSEG Stadium. LHP Luis Perez (4-6, 3.41) starts for New Hampshire against Binghamton RHP Brad Holt (0-1, 9.45). The game can be heard on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network beginning at 6:45pm with Bob Lipman.
The Fisher Cats will host the Portland Sea Dogs, Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, in a three-game series over Fourth of July weekend at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. The series begins on Saturday, July 4, when the Fisher Cats take the field wearing the red, white and blue of the New Hampshire Primaries for a 7:05pm game vs. Portland.
