Connecticut Defenders Defeat New Britain Rock Cats In 10-6 Slugfest

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -NORWICH, CT- Connecticut (58-43) out slugged their inner-state rival the New Britain Rock Cats(50-51) for a 10-6 win on a hot and muggy Sunday afternoon at Dodd Stadium to complete a three game sweep.
The Defenders produced all the offense they needed in their first inning of work scoring six runs off of four hits. RF-Bobby Felmy drove in the first run with an RBI fielder’s choice. CF-Mike Mooney then slapped a two RBI double down the right field line only to be followed by 3B-Sharlon Schoop who did the same with a bases clearing double.
New Britain got on the scoreboard in the second inning with two RBI singles by C-Jeff Christy and 3B-Luke Hughes to trim the lead to 6-2.
The Rock Cats had their biggest surge in the fourth driving in three runs off RBI singles by LF-Matt Moses and RF-Rene Tosoni but also took advantage of a Defenders error to cut the lead to one.
Connecticut got a two run lead back in the sixth after loading the bases and SS-Brandon Crawford beating out a double play ball to score 2B-Brock Bond.
New Britain would get a solo homerun from 1B-Whit Robbins to cut it back to one but Connecticut would load the bases in the bottom of the seventh and receive a bases clearing double down the leftfield line by LF-Brad Boyer giving the Defenders the 10-6 edge. Boyer finished with a perfect 4-4 day, three RBI’s, a walk and a run scored.
LHP Joe Paterson (3-4) earned the win for Connecticut with three innings of work allowing one earned run off of two hits and struck out three. Rock Cats’ starter RHP-Cole DeVries (6-10) suffered the loss allowing six earned runs off of seven hits, walked five and fanned one.
The Defenders will travel to Bowie tomorrow for a four game series with the Bay Sox (Orioles). Game one of the series is slated for 7:05pm and will feature Connecticut RHP-Geivy Garica (0-2) who will make his first start and Bowie’s ace LHP-Brian Matusz (6-0).
