COLORADO SPRINGS - In a game that was close throughout, the Sky Sox pulled out the victory 4-2 over the Bees in front of 7,169 fans at Security Service Field, thanks in part to Mark Bellhorn.
The Sky Sox stuck first as Matt Murton singled home Eric Young Jr. in the bottom of the first inning giving the Sox an early 1-0 lead. Colorado Spring’s lead didn’t last long, however, as Salt Lake scored in the top of the second when catcher Bobby Wilson belted a homer to left field off Sox starter Franklin Morales, tying the game up at 1-1. Not to be shown up, the Sox scored in the second, as Young Jr. hit an RBI single that bounced off Bees starting pitcher Trevor Bell’s (2-1) glove and bounced to short stop, Gary Patchett, who couldn’t make the play in time to get Young Jr. The Sky Sox didn’t have the 2-1 lead for long as the Bees answered right back in the top of the third by way of another solo bomb, this time by Patchett, tying the game at 2-2.
The game would stay tied at 2-2 until the sixth when Sox designated hitter Bellhorn cranked a ball to left-center field for a solo homer giving the Sox a 3-2 lead. Bellhorn wasn’t finished there as he added another solo blast in the eighth, this time a towering shot to left, extending the Sox lead to 4-2.
Ryan Speier (1-0) would pick up the win for the Sky Sox after replacing Morales in the fifth. Morales threw 5 1/3 innings giving up two runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Reliever Matt Wilhite shut the Bees down in order in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings to pick up his sixth save of the season.
Tomorrow nights game is the final game of the three game set and will feature right-hander Alan Johnson (7-3, 5.97) of the Sox versus righty Shane Loux (0-1, 3.85) of the Bees.
