FRISCO - The Frisco RoughRiders broke a 3-3 tie with an unearned run in the tenth inning, taking down the Springfield Cardinals by a score of 4-3 at Hammons Field on Thursday night.
St. Louis Cardinals' right-hander Kyle Lohse started for Springfield on Thursday night, throwing 79 pitches over 4 2/3 innings.
Lohse gave up a solo home run, just two batters into the game, as Mitch Moreland took him out to right-center field, giving Frisco a 1-0 advantage.
The right-hander, on the DL with soreness in his right forearm, settled down after giving up a homer and two walks in the first inning. Lohse allowed just one hitter to reach over the next three innings, until running into trouble in the fifth.
Renny Osuna opened the fifth inning with a single. One out later, Craig Gentry bunted his way aboard. Lohse got Moreland to pop for the second out, but followed by walking Justin Smoak to load the bases.
Brandon Dickson came out of the bullpen and struck out Tim Smith. The pitch was in the dirt though, as Smith advanced to first and a run scored to make it a 2-0 Frisco lead.
The Cards answered in the bottom of the inning, as Pete Kozma's sac fly scored Jim Rapoport, making it 2-1. Daniel Descalso followed with a two-run blast to right field, putting the Redbirds in front for the first time at 3-2. The homer for Descalso is his eighth and gives him a team-leading 51 RBIs.
Dickson seemed to be rolling along, but gave up a solo homer to Manny Pina with two outs in the eighth, as Frisco tied the game at 3-3.
Springfield had a chance to win it in the bottom of the ninth inning, as Nick Derba reached with a lead-off walk, then advanced to third on an error. But with the winning run at third and no outs, the Cards couldn't bring home the game-winner, as Mike Folli, Antone DeJesus and Kozma weren't able to take down eventual winner Brennan Garr (2-2).
Frisco got an unearned run in the tenth inning off Dickson (5-5), as pinch-hitter Adam Fox drove home the game-winner, getting a single off Tyler Norrick to make it a 4-3 game.
The Redbirds went 1-2-3 in the tenth inning, as Beau Vaughan collected his third save of the year.
Lohse allowed two runs on three hits over 4 2/3 innings, walking four, while striking out three in the no-decision. The right-hander will throw a bullpen in two days and could rejoin the big-league club for his next start.
Springfield (3-4 second half, 41-36 overall) sends Ryan Kulik (2-5) to the mound against Frisco right-hander Blake Beavan (0-1) on Friday night. Fans will be treated to an AM Pyrotechnics Friday Night Fireworks Display after Friday's game. Fans will also score Hardee's Little Thickburger Coupons as they come through the gates at Hammons Field.
Don't forget that the Cards are home through Tuesday night at Hammons Field. Coming up on Saturday is another huge Fireworks Extravaganza, as we celebrate Independence Day on July 4th!
