LAS VEGAS, Nev.—Reno’s offense was held to just four hits Thursday night, as the Las Vegas 51s took a 2-0 decision in an old-fashioned pitcher’s duel over the Aces at Cashman Field.
Las Vegas starter Brad Mills (2-8) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Thursday, before finally surrendering a lead-off single to Trent Oeltjen. All told, Mills worked eight shutout innings before turning the game over to Jonah Bayliss, who slammed the door in the ninth for his third save.
Aces starter Bryan Augenstein (1-4) was solid despite taking the loss, allowing two runs in the first inning before settling in to keep Las Vegas off the scoreboard for the remainder of his outing. Bobby Korecky spelled Augenstein in the eighth and tossed a scoreless frame, but the Aces offense was never able to catch up.
In addition to Oeltjen’s single in the seventh, Rusty Ryal, Ruben Gotay and Brandon Watson each collected one hit apiece for Reno.
The series comes to a close on Friday from Cashman Field. RHP Billy Buckner (2-2, 3.81 ERA) takes the ball for the Aces, while LHP Fabio Castro (3-3, 3.92 ERA) gets the nod for the 51s. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
Reno returns home for a nine-game homestand starting with a sold-out July 4 game against the Sacramento River Cats.
