MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The State College Spikes were held to three hits overall, and Jeremy Barnes’s sixth-inning grand slam provided some distance as the Williamsport Crosscutters took the final game of a three-game series at Historic Bowman Field, 8-1, on Monday night to halt the Spikes’ four-game win streak.
Justin Byler hit his first home run of the year for State College (9-9) to provide the lone Spikes run in the eighth inning. Ty Summerlin collected the other two hits for State College. The Williamsport (10-8) pitching tandem of Matt Way (1-0) and Austin Hyatt (1) combined to shut the Spikes out for the first time this season.

Barnes’s grand slam, his third home run of the year, came off of reliever Nelson Pereira (1-3) and opened the Crosscutters’ lead to 5-0. Williamsport then scored three more runs in the seventh off of Pereira and Zach Foster to complete their scoring.
Pereira allowed seven runs, five earned, on six hits and three walks over 1 2/3 innings. The left-hander came on in relief of State College starter Ricardo Paulino (0-1), who took the loss even though he retired the first 13 batters he faced before yielding a run on two hits in the fifth inning.
Way earned the win for the Crosscutters after allowing just one hit and striking out five over six innings. Hyatt earned the automatic three-inning save after giving up one run on two hits and striking out six.
The Spikes’ four-game winning streak was the longest since they won the final four games of the 2007 season from September 1-4.
State College returns home to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Tuesday night to begin a six-game homestand with a 7:05 matchup against the Batavia Muckdogs, affiliates of the St. Louis Cardinals. The Spikes will send right-hander Kyle McPherson (0-1) to the mound against an as yet unannounced Muckdogs starter.
