High Desert Mavericks Edge Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 6-5 

Rancho Cucamonga, CA- In the rubber match of the three game series, the Quakes struck first as Abel Nieves blasted a two-run homer off the foul pole down the right field line to grab an early 2-0 lead in the first inning.

High Desert would tie the game in the 2nd even though they didn’t hit the ball out of the infield to score their runs. Brent Johnson plated a run with an RBI fielder’s choice as the Quakes had an out at the plate, but missed the tag and the Mavs got their second run on a double steal to tie the game 2-2.

The Mavs took the lead in the 4th as Brent Johnson hit a one out double and scored on an RBI single by Travis Scott to go ahead 3-2.

The Quakes would tie the game with two outs in the 4th as Alberto Rosario was hit by a pitch and scored from first on an RBI double by Andrew Romine.

High Desert got to Manuel Flores in the 5th as Edilio Colina and Kuo Hui Lo led of with singles and scored on a one-out, two-run double by Jamie McOwen. The Mavs would add another run in the 6th against Flores as Tyson Gillies reached on a fielder’s choice with two outs, stole second and scored on a double by Edilio Colina to knock Flores from the game and take a 6-3 lead.

Rancho made things close in the 8th as Carlos Colmenares singled and Jeremy Moore collected a pinch-hit single to put runners on the corners with one out. Alberto Rosario followed with an RBI ground out and after Jeremy Moore stole third, he scored on a wild pitch to bring the score to 6-5.

The Quakes had a chance in the 9th to tie the game as Efren Navarro singled and Jay Brossman reached on an error. But, with runners on the corners, PJ Phillips struck out looking to end the game 6-5.

The Quakes will welcome Lake Elsinore to the Epicenter on Friday. Right hander Jeremy Thorne will pitch for the Quakes against left hander Nick Schmidt for the Storm. Game time is scheduled for 7:35pm.
