New Hampshire Fisher Cats Double Up the Altoona Curve 4-2

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com-Altoona, PA- Randy Boone yielded one hit in seven shutout innings to earn his team-leading ninth victory, and Danny Farquhar worked out of bases-loaded jams in the eighth and ninth innings to notch his 11th save, as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats beat the Altoona Curve, 4-2, on Saturday night at Blair County Ballpark.

Boone (9-7) allowed a leadoff double to Brian Friday (1-for-3, 2B, BB) and did not allow another hit in seven strong frames, retiring the final 13 batters he faced, one start after allowing a season-high 10 hits to Altoona (50-70) at Merchantsauto.com Stadium last Sunday. The right-hander matched a season high with six strikeouts, walked three and hit a batter.

The Fisher Cats (54-65) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first against Yoslan Herrera, who yielded three walks and two singles in the inning, including a two-out infield hit to Darin Mastroianni (3-for-4, BB, RBI, R, 2 SB) that scored Todd Donovan (1-for-5, BB, R).

Herrera (9-1) managed to survive five innings, yielding a run on six hits and five walks. The right-hander fanned six but suffered his first loss of the season.

New Hampshire built the lead to 2-0 in the top of the seventh against Derek Hankins when Adam Calderone (1-for-5, 2B, R) hit a one-out double to left and scored when David Cooper (2-for-4, 2B, BB, RBI) singled to right

Zach Dials came on for Boone in the eighth and allowed all four batters he faced to reach. Jeff Corsaletti (1-for-2, RBI, BB) hit a bases-loaded single to left, scoring Steve Lerud, who doubled, to trim the Fisher Cats' lead to 2-1.

Farquhar was summoned out the bullpen and induced a 1-2-3 double-play grounder from Friday and got Shelby Ford (0-for-4) to fly out, preserving the one run lead.

The Fisher Cats tacked on two critical insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Al Quintana (2-for-4, 2B, BB, R) led off with a double to center off Hankins. Mastroianni beat out a bunt single and Quintana scored when third baseman Pedro Alvarez threw wildly to first, allowing Mastroianni to reach second. Scott Nestor came on, uncorked a wild pitch to advance Mastroianni to third, and Jonathan Diaz (2-for-5, RBI) drove in the run with an infield single for a 4-1 lead.

The Curve fought back in the home half of the ninth when Farquhar walked Miles Durham (0-for-3, BB, R) and Jason Delaney (0-for-2, HBP, BB), and allowed Lerud's RBI single. After Jonel Pacheco (1-for-3, BB) singled to load the bases, Farquhar induced the game-ending double play off the bat of Ray Chang (1-for-4), giving the Fisher Cats their third win in their last four games.

The Fisher Cats wrap up their six-game road trip and three-game series against the Curve Sunday night at 6:05pm. Right-hander Kenny Rodriguez (2-3, 4.14) takes the mound for New Hampshire against Altoona right-hander Michael Crotta (6-6, 4.83). Radio coverage begins at 5:45pm with the BayRing Pre-Game Show on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.
