Portland Beavers Dam Breaks, Omaha Royals Blank Portland 5-0 - AAA, Pacific Coast League

Box Score below - PORTLAND , Ore. – Former Beaver Mike O’Connor fanned six over seven scoreless innings and teamed with reliever Carlos Rosa on a three-hit, 5-0 shutout over Portland before 5,012 Friday night at PGE Park.

O’Connor, who was released by the Beavers on July 10 after making six appearances with the club, was making his debut with the Royals after signing with the organization earlier in the week. The left-hander held the Beavers without a hit through the first five innings and ended up allowing just three hits and no walks to beat his former team.

O’Connor (1-0) out-dueled his counterpart, Aaron Poreda, who was making his third start with Portland (50-70) since joining the San Diego Padres organization in a trade that sent Jake Peavy to the Chicago White Sox. Poreda was sharp through six, but issued four walks and uncorked a pair of wild pitches in the seventh as the Royals (49-69) built their lead to 5-0.

The loss was Portland ’s sixth in a row, matching its season high.

Kila Ka’aihue broke a scoreless tie with a leadoff homer off Poreda in the fifth. The Royals later loaded the bases on three walks (one intentional) in the seventh, upping their lead to 5-0 on a sac fly to center from Tim Raines Jr., a wild pitch by Poreda that allowed Mario Lisson to score from third and a two-run single up the middle by Luis Hernandez, who led the way with three hits.

Poreda (0-2) allowed five runs, six walks and five hits while striking out four over 6 2/3 innings in the loss.

NOTES:
Before the game, the Beavers added catcher Eliezer Alfonzo and pitcher Mike Ekstrom to the active roster after both were optioned from San Diego . Right-hander Carlos Guevara was transferred to Class AA San Antonio.
