Dayton Dragons Downed By Burlington Bees, 5-4

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -Dayton, Ohio—Shawn Griffin’s line drive single to right field brought in David Wood from third base to break a 4-4 tie in the top of the ninth inning as the Burlington Bees defeated the Dayton Dragons 5-4 on Saturday night before a Fifth Third Field record crowd of 9,558. The two clubs have split the first two games of the three-game series.

The Dragons are 8-5 over their last 13 games. They have been leading or tied in the ninth inning in all 13 games.

After Dayton scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 4-4, the Bees put together a winning rally against Dragons reliever Mark James (1-6) in the ninth. With one out in the inning, Wood singled to center and went to third on a hit-and-run single to right by Juan Graterol. Griffin then lined a hit to right to break the tie.

Dayton got the night’s scoring started with a run in the second inning on a two-out, run-scoring double by Tony Brown. After Burlington tied the game in the top of the third, Dayton’s Byron Wiley delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead at 2-1.

David Wood hit a two-run home run off Dragons starting pitcher Oscar Castro in the fourth and the Bees added another run on an error in the fifth to build a 4-2 lead.

Dayton’s Josh Fellhauer belted a two-out triple in the sixth to drive in two runs and tie the game at 4-4.

The Dragons had a chance to take the lead in the seventh when they got back-to-back singles to start the inning from Carlos Mendez and Cody Puckett. But Byron Wiley struck out and Humberto Sosa grounded into a double play to end the threat and the Dragons did not have another base runner the rest of the night.

Dayton finished with 11 hits. Fellhauer, Mendez, Wiley, and Miguel Rojas each collected two hits. Mendez extended his hitting streak to 13 straight games while Wiley extended his to 12 straight.

The Dragons (15-19, 43-61) host the Bees (15-19, 44-60) on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. in the finale of the series. Mark Serrano (0-0, 2.77) will start for Dayton. The Dragons begin a four-game series with the Great Lakes Loons at Fifth Third Field on Monday at 7:00 p.m.
