Portland Sea Dogs Hand Altoona Curve 9-0 Defeat

 

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -(Portland, ME) – The Portland Sea Dogs (52-57) received a gutsy 6-inning performance by RHP Ryne Lawson (3-9) and scored three unearned runs in beating the Altoona Curve (45-66), 9-0 on Wednesday night at Hadlock Field to even up the series at one game apiece.

Lawson stranded 7 runners over 6 innings and yielded five hits, two walks with four strikeouts. The Curve had numerous opportunities to score off the righty but went 1-for-10 with runners-in-scoring position against Lawson and 1-for-15 on the night.

LHP Kyle Bloom (4-7) struggled with command in the fourth inning,aiding the Sea Dogs in a 4-run inning to grab a 4-0 advantage.The lefty lasted only 3.2 innings, surrendering four hits, four runs (two earned) but five walks in taking the loss.

DH Juan Apodaca and C Luis Exposito ignited the rally with singles to start the fourth. SS Yamaico Navarro walked and LF Jason Placed forced in Portland’s first run with a free pass. RF Matt Sheely hit into a run-scoring 6-4-3 double play. 2B Ryan Khoury walked and CF Ryan Kalish hit into a fielder’s choice but SS Brian Friday’s throw was wide of the second base bag, enabling Navarro and Khoury to score.

Portland added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings off Altoona’s bullpen. Kalish knocked in Navarro with a fielder’s choice and LF Jason Place reached on an error by 3B Pedro Alvarez to give the Sea Dogs a 6-0 lead. Ironically, the ‘Dogs did not pick up hit with a runner-in-scoring position until the eighth inning off RHP Jared Hughes. Khoury led off the inning with a single, Kalish walked and they both scored on a triple by 3B Jorge Jimenez. DH Jon Still knocked in his 73rd run with a single to give Portland a 9-0 lead.

Portland relievers LHP Dustin Richardson (2 IP, H, 3 BB, 2 SO) and RHP Chris Province (IP, SO) closed the game out with a combined three scoreless frames.

The Sea Dogs and Curve wrap up their 3-game series on Thursday afternoon beginning at 12:00 PM from Hadlock Field. RHP Adam Mills (9-5, 4.87) shoots for his 8th straight win against RHP Derek Hankins (3-3, 4.28). Notes...Portland improved to 6-15 against the Southern Division and look for their first series win in 7 tries against a south opponent this season...The Sea Dogs picked up their 5th team shutout this season...Apodaca extended his season-high hitting streak to 7 games...Place has picked up an RBI in consecutive starts...Lawson has picked up all three wins at Hadlock Field...Both teams stranded 11 runners, Portland went 2-for-17 with RISP.
