West Michigan Whitecaps Fall in Game 1 to the Great Lake Loons 7-2

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com-MIDLAND, MI-  Potent pitching from starter Aaron Miller and a balanced offense attack helped the Great Lakes Loons overpower the West Michigan Whitecaps, 7-2, in game one of the best-of-three playoff series on Wednesday night.  Miller outdueled Whitecaps’ ace Casey Crosby in the much anticipated matchup of left handed starters.  Every Loon starter got at least one hit as Great Lakes leads the series, one game to none.

Casey Crosby took the mound for the first time since the eighteenth of August.  The ‘Caps southpaw lasted 2.1 innings in the loss allowing 5 earned runs on 6 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.

Great Lakes put a run on the board in the bottom of the second when Joe Becker came through with a two-out, RBI single to score Kyle Russell who had tripled.

In the third the Loons broke the game wide open.  Great Lakes sent 9 men to the plate, getting 4 hits for four runs, and led 5-0 after three innings of play.

Dee Gordon’s sacrifice fly in the sixth gave Great Lakes an additional run for a 6-0 lead.

The Midwest League’s leader in homeruns, Kyle Russell, launched a solo shot to right leading off the seventh for a 7-0 Loons’ advantage.

West Michigan avoided the shutout in the ninth as Brandon Douglas ripped a two-run double down into the corner to bring home Alden Carrithers and Ben Guez, and make the score, 7-2.

Victor Larez threw well in relief going 4.1 innings to help save the bullpen.

Brandon Douglas was the only ‘Cap with more than one hit.  He finished 2-4 with 2 RBI.

The Whitecaps face a must-win game two of the series on Thursday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.  The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET with Adam Wilk set to throw for West Michigan.
