Carolina League All-Stars

LONNIE CHISENHALL, CORD PHELPS and TIM FEDROFF are Carolina League End of Year All-Stars...The three K-Tribe selections are the second most of any team in the Carolina League this season...All three players are in their first full season of professional baseball.

Chisenhall makes the list as a utility infielder, even after getting promoted to Double A Akron on August 8th...The K-Tribe third baseman hit .276 with 18 home runs and 79 RBI in 99 games for Kinston...Chisenhall was a mid-season All-Star selection.

Phelps leads the Carolina League with 91 walks and is tied for second in the CL in on-base percentage at .384...Phelps is hitting .257 on the season with four home runs and 52 RBI...Phelps also leads Carolina League second basemen with a .993 fielding percentage, having committed just four errors in 541 chances (114 games) this season.

Fedroff makes the All-Star list as a utility outfielder...He is currently 10th in the Carolina League with a .277 batting average...Fedroff is tied for second with Phelps with a .384 on-base percentage and has the longest consecutive on-base streak in the league this season at 36 games.

Eastern League Pitcher of the Year

Aeros RHP JEANMAR GOMEZ has been named Eastern League Pitcher of the Year, the league announced Thursday...Gomez is just the second Akron pitcher to win the award, following Adam Miller in 2006.

EL Manager of the Year

The Eastern League announced that Aeros manager MIKE SARBAUGH has been selected as the 2009 Eastern League Manager of the Year...In his second season in Akron, Sarbaugh has led his club to a league-best record of 83-53 (.610) and a fifth consecutive postseason berth.

Yesterday: Columbus was handed a 4-2 defeat by the Toledo Mud Hens last night...LHP CHUCK LOFGREN pitched five shutout innings while the Clippers built a 2-0 lead but in the sixth, Lofgren walked the leadoff batter and allowed a hit to put two runners on base...Mike Hessman came up to the plate and smacked a three-run homer, giving the Mud Hens a 3-2 lead...Lofgren would last six innings, giving up three runs on six hits...Toledo would tally another run in the eighth off of LHP ZACH JACKSON...DH JESUS MERCHAN went 2-for-4 with a 2B and RBI.

News & Notes: OF JOSE CONSTANZA’s 44SB on the year are a new franchise single-season record and are good for second in the Eastern League...OF JERAD HEAD has gone 12-for-27 with 5 2B, 3 3B and 12RBI over his last seven games...CA CARLOS SANTANA is hitting .329 (50-152) in 44 games since the All-Star game...His 94RBI rank second in the league...INF JOSH RODRIGUEZ is hitting .327 (16-49) in 16 homes games this year at Akron...INF BEAU MILLS has 12RBI over his last nine games (12-35)...Akron set a new Eastern League record by winning at least 80 games for the fifth straight year...The Aeros also became the first team in EL history (dating back to 1923) to record five straight 80-win seasons, breaking a tie with the 1976-79 West Haven Yankees.

Yesterday: A Kinston error in the bottom of the 12th gave Frederick a 3-2 walk-off win in Maryland...Starter LHP RUSSELL YOUNG was amazing, going seven innings and giving up just two runs on five hits in the no decision...RHP CHEN LEE was handed the loss as he gave up a leadoff double in the 12th and then committed a throwing error on a bunt attempt that scored the walk-off run...RF LUCAS MONTERO hit a lead off homer run in the first inning to start the game...The Keys would take a 2-1 lead in the second inning...Kinston plated an unearned run in the sixth when 1B DOUG PICKENS scored on a dropped ball in the outfield...RHP DAVID ROBERTS and RHP KYLE LANDIS each pitched two shutout innings.

Yesterday: The Mahoning Valley split a doubleheader with the Jamestown Jammers dropping the opener 5-4 and winning the nightcap 1-0.

Game 1: RHP MARTY POPHAM pitched the first six innings and allowed 4H, 3ER with 5K receiving a no-decision... The Scrappers struck first with a HR by 1B JUAN APONTE (1-3, 2RBI, RS) in the second inning.

Game 2: RHP KYLE SMITH and RHP ANTWONIE HUBBARD compiled for 7.0 shutout innings allowing two hits with two walks with nine strikeouts... The lone run came from DH CASEY FRAWLEY’s bat scoring in CA MOISES MONTERO in the 6th inning.

News & Notes: In his first 26 games, OF JASON KIPNIS has hit safely in 20-of-26 games and is hitting .317 (32-101) with 8 2B, 2 3B, HR, 19RBI, 12BB, 2SB, and 19RS... Since the break, OF JORDAN HENRY is hitting .379 (22-58) with 5 2B, 7RBI, 3BB, 5SB and 12RS... He is 2nd in the league with 48RS and 46 walks and leads the league in OBP (.414)... Since joining the Scrappers, INF JESUS BRITO has hit safely in 17-of-22 games hitting .304 (24-79) with 7 2B, 15RBI, 13BB and 14RS... RHP CORY BURNS has received a decision in 11 straight outings going 1-2 with eight saves... He has yielded 16.1 innings and allowing 9H, 5R/4ER with 18K... RHP BRETT BRACH is 7th in the league with a 2.38ERA and T2nd with 14GS throwing 72.0 innings... LHP VIDAL NINO has allowed one or no earned runs in 11-of-12 games (7GS)... AZL INDIANS (Rookie)

Arizona League Streak: --

’09 Overall: 24-32 (.429) – 5th, 9.5GB Last 10: --

2009 Season In Review: In the first year as the Arizona League Indians at Goodyear Ballpark, the team finished with a 24-32 (.429) overall record. The AZL Indians offense finished with the 3rd best batting average in the league with .278 and piled up the 2nd most hits with 561. The pitching staff posted the 4th highest Ks in the league with 525 and tied for 2nd with three shutouts.

1B CHRIS KERSTEN played in 45 games, hitting .328 (59-180) with 20 2B, 2 3B, 4HR, 33RBI and 33R. He was 2nd in the league with doubles and finished with the 7th best batting average. Had a 12-game hitting streak batting .447 (21-47) with 8 2B, 2HR, 10RBI, and 11R.

3B JESUS BRITO started the season with the AZL Indians and played in 35 games, hitting .366 (49-134) with 12 2B, 8 3B, 3HR, 25RBI and 36R. He was called up to Mahoning Valley on August 8th and still qualified as the batting leader in the Arizona League in average, OBP (.439) and was second in the league with a .642 SLG.

2B ARGENIS MARTINEZ played in 51 games, hitting .289 (58-201) with 7 2B, 4 3B, 17RBI and 34R. In the month of July alone (22G), he was hitting .365 (31-85) with 4-2B, 2-3B, 8RBI and 12R.

RHP ALEXANDER MORALES finished the season 5-2 with a 4.99ERA (48.1IP, 56H, 27ER, 15BB, 53K). He won his first three decisions (4GS) and posted a 2.25ERA (20.0IP, 14H, 5ER, 7BB, 27K).

LHP JUAN LARA returned on July 2nd recovering from a serious automobile accident and went on to pitch in 15 games yielding 17.0 innings (24H, 8ER, 8BB, 19K) and posted a 4.24ERA.

LHP KIRK WETMORE finished 1-3 with a 4.19ERA appearing in 11 games with seven starts (43.0IP, 43H, 20ER, 11BB, 45K). As a reliever, he had a 2.25ERA in four games (16.0IP, 11H, 4ER, 4BB, 21K).
