Birmingham Barons Cannot Hold Off Chattanooga Lookouts Rally 5-4

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com-CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Barons got off to an early lead and ultimately were able to hold off the Lookouts just enough to come away with a 5-4 win in Saturday night action at AT&T Field.

Birmingham got off to an early 4-0 lead in the first. With one out already on the board, Lookouts starting pitcher James Adkins (6-10) encountered some major turbulence. After a C.J. Retherford single and David Cook walk, three consecutive singles by Dayan Viciedo, Lee Cruz, and Javier Colina resulted in three runs crossing the plate. Adkins continued to struggle and walked John Shelby III to load the bases. A subsequent Jared Price hit by pitch pushed home another run across the plate and gave the Barons a 4-0 lead.

Both teams would fail to score until the seventh inning. A Lee Cruz RBI double stretched the Barons' lead to 5-0, but the Lookouts plated two in the bottom portion of the inning to get into the action.  With Birmingham starting pitcher John Ely (14-2) out of the game after throwing six innings of shutout baseball, the opportunistic Lookouts jumped all over relief pitcher Jacob Merceaux. Four consecutive singles from Eddy Perez, Vinny Rottino, Tommy Giles, and Gaby Gutierrez translated into two runs for Chattanooga.

The Lookouts kept rolling in the eighth with two more runs. With two outs, Gaby Martinez singled in an innocuous manner, but Perez slammed a two-run shot to put the score at 5-4.

Despite collecting two hits in the ninth, the Lookouts were unable to manufacture another run, and Birmingham closer Clevelan Santeliz notched his tenth save of the season in the process.
