Portland Sea Dogs Close Out Season In Style With 12-4 Pounding of New Hampshire Fisher Cats

 

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -(Portland, ME) – The Portland Sea Dogs (67-74) concluded the 2009 regular season in style, pounding out 15 hits, blasting four homers in a 12-4 thrashing of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (64-78) on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field. With Monday’s crowd of 6,140 fans, the Sea Dogs drew over 400,000 fans for the ninth time in franchise history.

1B Jon Still led the offense charge for the Sea Dogs, which included four homers – 2 by Still. The Mississippi native went 3-for-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI and picked up his franchise record 40th double of the season. Portland’s entire lineup had at least one hit, receiving 3-hit performances from LF Daniel Nava, 3B Jorge Jimenez and Still.

RHP Blake Maxwell (7-8) earned his 7th win of the season, working six innings on eight hits, four runs, one walk and seven strikeouts. RHP Kenny Rodriguez (4-5) suffered the loss for the visitors, allowing eight runs on nine hits but three homers over 3.2 IP.

LF Ryan Kalish ignited the scoring with a 2-run homer in the first inning – Still’s homer came two batters later. Leading 3-2, Portland exploded for five runs (all with two outs) in the fourth inning, knocking Rodriguez out of the game. Nava nailed an RBI single to plate SS Yamaico Navarro, who led off with a single. Jimenez singled to right field to score Nava but a throwing error on RF Nick Gorneault enabled Kalish to score. Still lifted a 2-run homer over the Maine Monster and finished the season with 17 HR and 89 RBI.

New Hampshire plated two runs off Maxwell in the sixth inning but Portland returned the favor with a 2-spot off LHP Nate Starner. C Juan Apodaca nailed a one-out solo homer and Nava singled home Navarro.

RHP Chris Province worked two scoreless innings of relief and RHP Chad Rhoades closed out the ninth with a perfect frame.

Notes...Rhoades tied Binghamton’s LHP Roy Merritt for the most appearances in the league with 56...Before the game, 10th annual team awards were announced: Jorge Jimenez (MVP), Felix Doubront (Pitcher-of-the-Year), Juan Apodaca (10th Player Award) and Blake Maxwell (Citizen-of-the-Year).
