John Curry Picks Up Shutout In Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 3-0 Win Over Bridgeport Sound Tigers

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -Bridgeport, Conn. – Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins net-minder John Curry turned aside all 35 shots the Sound Tigers fired on him to earn his second shutout of the season in the Penguins 3-0 win. Mark Letestu, Nick Johnson and Connor James had the three tallies for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. With the loss, the Sound Tigers record drops to 25-13-2-2, keeping them with 54 points. The Penguins draw within a point of the Sound Tigers for second place in the East Division with 53.

Letestu opened the scoring for the Penguins three minutes into the opening frame when he snapped his tenth goal of the season past Sound Tigers’ starting goaltender, Peter Mannino. Johnson and Tommy Goebel had the assists on the tally giving Wilkes-Barre/Scranton the 1-0 lead. The Sound Tigers had the chance to tie the score with eleven minutes remaining in the opening frame but Curry made a big save sending the play back up ice. Johnson led the rush for the Penguins and came in alone on Mannino. After a quick head-fake, Johnson cut back to his fore-hand and slid the puck past the Sound Tiger goalie’s left pad for his sixth goal of the year coming at the 9:07 mark of the period. Jean-Phillipe Cote had the lone assist on the goal.

Less than a minute into the second period, the Penguins extended their lead to 3-0 when James banged a loose puck past Mannino. Jeff Taffe snapped a shot on goal that Mannino made the initial save on but James was stationed at the right post shooting the rebound in for his 12 goal of the season.

The Sound Tigers were unable to muster much offense in the third as Curry finished the final period of regulation with 14 saves.

Mannino had 25 saves while facing 28 shots. Both teams were 0-for-3 on the man-advantage.

On Wednesday, the Sound Tigers will begin their four-game road trip in Albany as they take on the River Rats at 7 p.m. The team’s next home game is set for Saturday, January 31 when the Portland Pirates pay their first visit of the season to Arena at Harbor Yard. Face-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
