Johnstowns Chiefs Fall to Cincinnati Cyclones 4-2

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Johnstown Chiefs failed in another comeback attempt on Saturday night as they fell to the Cincinnati Cyclones 4-2 at the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink at the Cambria County War Memorial.

Michael Cohen continued his hot play from Friday night into Saturday as he got the visitors on the board at 13:29 of the first. Off of a face off at center, Cohen stole a Jon Landry pass and beat Kris Mayotte on a breakaway. The first ended with Cincinnati ahead 1-0.

The Cyclones would tally on the power play in the second period to extend the lead to two. Ian McKenzie got position in front of the net and tipped in a pass from Donny Grover. Johnstown fought on, though, and Sean Berkstresser’s fourth of the season at 14:50 put the Chiefs within one. The play started with a long drive from Blair Yaworski that was turned aside by Kyle Gajewski, but Marty Mjelleli kept the rebound alive for Berkstresser to bury. Cincinnati re-upped the two goal lead when Cohen scored on another unassisted breakaway at 15:59.

With the score 3-1 in the third, Johnstown got back within one goal when Ryan Del Monte slammed home a one-timer for his eighth of the season with 5:13 left. Wes Clark hit Del Monte in the slot from behind the net, after Landry hit Clark in back. The Chiefs got Kris Mayotte off for the extra attacker with a bout 24 seconds left, but Barrett Ehgoetz scored an empty net goal with four seconds left.

Mayotte stopped 31 of 34 shots in the losing effort. The Chiefs were 0 for 3 on the power play.

Mark your calendars! The Chiefs are back on home ice Saturday, January 3nd at 7:05 PM when they host the Cincinnati Cyclones.
