CHL Announces Forward Joel Broda of the Moose Jaw Warriors as POTW

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com- Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that forward Joel Broda of the Moose Jaw Warriors is the Boston Pizza CHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 4. Broda scored nine goals and two assists for 11 points in four games with a plus-minus rating of plus-5.

 

Broda was exceptional for the Warriors who played all four games on the road this week finishing with a 3-1 record. He scored two goals and was the second star of the game in Vancouver on Tuesday as the Warriors fell to the Giants 8-3. Broda celebrated New Year’s Eve in Chilliwack with three goals and one assist in his first star of the game performance with the 4-3 win over the Bruins. The hat-trick was his third career and second of the season. On Friday night, Broda scored two goals and one assist and was named second star of the 8-4 Warriors win over the Kamloops Blazers. His week would end with another strong offensive performance in Kelowna scoring two goals in the 5-2 victory over the Rockets. Broda was also named first star of that game.

 

Broda, a 19-year-old from Prince Albert, SK, is in his fourth WHL season and second with the Moose Jaw Warriors. Broda is currently 10th in WHL scoring with a league-best 36 goals with 12 assists for 48 points in 39 games. Broda is the first two-time Boston Pizza CHL Player of the Week winner in the 2008-09 season having received the honour for his efforts the week ending September 28. He was a fifth round selection by the Washington Capitals in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Eric O’Dell of the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves was also considered for the award this week after scoring five goals and three assists for eight points in four games including a four-point night and second star performance in a 6-5 shootout loss to the Niagara IceDogs on Saturday. Mikhail Stefanovich of the Quebec Remparts was considered after scoring seven goals and one assist for eight points in three wins this week. He scored four goals on Tuesday in a 10-1 win over the Baie-Comeau Drakkar. Two of his seven goals were game-winning and he had a plus-minus rating of plus-7.
