The Lowell Devils picked up their first win of the 2009-10 season in splitting a pair of home games last weekend at the Tsongas Arena.  On Saturday, the Devils could not complete a third-period rally in their home opener versus the Worcester Sharks, losing 5-4.  Lowell rebounded nicely the next day with a 4-0 shutout of the Portland Pirates.  Two road games lie on the horizon for the Devils, Friday at Providence and Saturday at Worcester.

Rewind:

Saturday, DEVILS 4 vs. Sharks 5

Stephen Gionta and Matt Taormina each scored two goals for the Devils, but Worcester used a 3-for-7 effort on the power play to pull away and hold on for the 5-4 win.  Tied, 1-1, Brandon Mashinter tallied a pair of goals on the man-advantage to put Worcester up two heading into the third period.  In the final frame, Lowell was able to get the puck past Tyson Sexsmith three times, but could not notch the equalizer before time expired.  Gerald Coleman made 28 saves on 32 shots in the loss.

Sunday, DEVILS 4 vs. Pirates 0

Mike McKenna made 38 saves in his Lowell Devils debut to blank the Portland Pirates, 4-0.  Nathan Perkovich’s first regular season professional goal gave Lowell a 1-0 lead at 11:45 of the first and proved to be the game winner.  Brad Snetsinger and Vladimir Zharkov scored 1:12 apart in the second period, while Tim Sestito added another goal later in the period.  Perkovich, Snetsinger and Zharkov each registered a goal and an assist, while Patrick Davis had two helpers.

Coming Up

The Devils are back on the road this weekend, beginning with a match-up on Friday night versus the Providence Bruins.  This is the first meeting of the year between the Devils and Bruins.  Providence has won three straight versus Lowell going back to the 2008-09 season.  Andy Wozniewski is tied for first among defensemen with seven points (1g-6a-7pts), while he leads blueliners in assists (6) and power play assists (4).

Lowell faces the Worcester Sharks in their home opener on Saturday at the DCU Center.  The Sharks are 2-0-0-1 on the season after their win over the Devils on Saturday.  Defenseman Derek Joslin recorded four assists in the contest.  Worcester has registered the first goal in all three of its games thus far.  The Sharks lead the AHL with a 31.3% success rate on the man-advantage (5-for-16).
