Milwaukee Admirals Defeat Peoria Rivermen 5-2 - AHL
Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 08:35AM PEORIA, Ill. – The Milwaukee Admirals used three power-play goals to upend the Peoria Rivermen 5-2 at Carver Arena on Wednesday night. Cal O’Reilly registered four assists to up his total to six in the two games against the Rivermen this season.

Jonathan Blum’s first professional goal gave Milwaukee a lead that they would never relinquish just 9:32 into the first period. While on a delayed penalty Blum, the 23rd overall pick by Nashville in the 2007 draft, one-timed a pass from O’Reilly past Hannu Toivonen to open the scoring. Cody Franson added to the lead at 14:26 while the Admirals benefited from a four-on-three advantage. Alex Sulzer and O’Reilly combined to set up Franson for a one-timer from the top of the left circle for his first goal of the season.
The Admirals staked themselves a 3-0 lead to open the second period, again on the power play. Dave Scatchard redirected a Sulzer pass over the shoulder of Toivonen for his second goal against the Rivermen this season.
D.J. King, on a conditioning stint from the St. Louis Blues, gave the 3,586 fans at Carver Arena a reason to cheer by dropping his gloves with Triston Grant. It was the 42nd AHL fight of his career and sparked the Peoria offense to their first goal of the game. Just 2:40 after the bout, Yan Stastny fed Nicholas Drazenovic with a no-look backhand pass into the crease for his first goal of the season.
The score held until the final minute of the second frame when the two teams traded goals 18 seconds apart. Sulzer’s slap shot ricocheted off Andreas Thuresson in the slot and bounced into the Rivermen net. Peoria responded with Derek Armstrong deflecting Julian Talbot’s wrist shot past Mark Dekanich with just 40 seconds remaining in the period.
A veteran of 471 NHL games, it was the first AHL goal for Armstrong since he scored a hat trick on Oct. 12, 2002 while playing with the Manchester Monarchs.
The Rivermen outshot the Admirals 12-11 in the third period but an empty-net tally by Ben Eaves at 18:53 was the only goal of the frame.
Toivonen finished the game with 29 saves on 33 shots while Dekanich earned the win with 22 saves. The Rivermen are now 2-2-0 on the season while Milwaukee jumped them in the standings with a 2-0-1 record. After playing twice in the past two games, the Rivermen and Admirals will not see play one another until Nov. 6.
