BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Bloomington PrairieThunder will be out to extend its lead in the International Hockey League standings this weekend with three games in three days with the first two matchups at U.S. Cellular Coliseum  on Friday and Saturday followed by a road game on Sunday.

Dayton is the opponent Friday with Quad City coming to town Saturday. Both are 7:05 p.m. starts. Bloomington ends the weekend with a 4:05 p.m. contest against Quad City at the iWireless Center in Moline.

The PrairieThunder will be seeking to extend its undefeated mark of four games at home this year and stretch a five-game home winning streak, dating back to last season. Bloomington has a 51-58-6-3 all-time record at ‘The Cell’ barn.

The four straight victories at home to start the season equals the team record set in 2007-08, while the longest overall home winning streak is seven, which was set last season. The longest undefeated overall streak at home is nine, also set a year ago.  

The PrairieThunder and Dayton will be meeting for the third meeting. Bloomington holds a 2-0 lead in the season series, including a 4-0 shutout over the Gems two weeks ago at U.S. Cellular Coliseum. The PrairieThunder is off to the best start to a season in the franchise’s four-year history. Previous teams have compiled 3-7 and 4-6 back-to-back marks after the first 10 games.

Bloomington and Quad City have met once this year at U.S. Cellular Coliseum with the PrairieThunder earning a 6-3 triumph. The PrairieThunder will wear pink jerseys and use a limited number of pink sticks in the contest to celebrate ‘Pink in the Rink Night’ for Breast Cancer Awareness in conjunction with Deb’s Mardi Gras Marchers Relay for Life team.

The jerseys and sticks will be auctioned off following the game with a portion of the proceeds going to Deb’s Mardi Gras Marchers team and ultimately to fight breast cancer.

While Bloomington leads the league in a number of statistical categories, the most interesting one is penalty minutes. Last season one of the biggest knocks against the PrairieThunder was that its lineup was small and not real physical.

This season the team has 291 penalty minutes or an average of 29.1 minutes per game. Projected out over the 76-game schedule, the PrairieThunder would end with 2,216 penalty minutes. Last year the team was next to last in the league with only 1,418 minutes.
