Peoria Rivermen Edge Texas Stars 5-4 - AHL
Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 10:10AM PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria Rivermen won their third straight game by beating the Texas Stars 5-4 in overtime on Wednesday night at Carver Arena. Bryce Lampman’s second goal of the game came just 33 seconds into the extra session and ended the first-place Stars’ five-game winning streak.
Out of the first 14 Rivermen games of the season, eight of them have gone into overtime including each of the last three.
The back-and-forth game included four lead changes as the two teams traded goals and finished all three periods tied. Yan Stastny’s power-play goal at 6:31 of the first period tied the game after Greg Rallo had scored just 45 seconds in for Texas. The power-play goal was their fifth in their last eight chances but was their only successful attempt on five tries on Wednesday.
Ivan Vishnevskiy, who was assigned by Dallas to Peoria for the entire 2008-09 season, scored on a Texas power play to give the Stars back the lead. It was his fourth of the season and the first of three Texas power-play goals.
The Rivermen responded right away as Ryan Reaves deflected a Chris Porter shot through Matt Climie at 15:33. Reaves had a hand in giving the Rivermen the lead for the first time at 7:02 of the second, picking up the primary assist on Lampman’s first of the game. With Cam Paddock setting the screen, Lampman’s wrist shot snuck in for his second goal in as many games.
Texas scored the next two goals on the power play to reclaim the lead 4-3 in the third period. Warren Peters knocked a rebound past Hannu Toivonen at 15:33 of the second period while Rallo’s second of the night just 4:00 into the third period gave the Stars the lead.
The game-tying goal came with only 9:23 remaining in regulation off the stick of Barry Tallackson. Tyson Strachan, in just his third game of the season, rushed the puck down the left-wing wall before backhanding a pass into the slot. Tallackson chipped it over the left shoulder of Climie for his third of the season.
Despite outshooting the Stars 11-6 in the third period and 36-32 in regulation the game required overtime. Lampman intercepted a pass in his own end and raced up ice in the opening seconds of overtime. After he tried to drop the puck off it was pushed to the front of the net where Porter tried to direct it on goal. The Stars couldn’t clear the zone as Paddock held the line and fired across to Lampman for a one-timer.
The win improved Peoria’s OT record to 2-1 and are now 5-3 in games going past regulation. The two points leapfrogged the Rivermen over Rockford and Houston into second place in the West Division standings.
