MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -BINGHAMTON, NY – Josh Hennessy and Denis Hamel each scored two goals as the Binghamton Senators blanked the Adirondack Phantoms 7-0 on Thursday night at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
The Phantoms had strong start the game, coming out with lots of energy and creating more chances than the Senators over the first half of the period. However, it was Binghamton that struck first getting a late goal at 18:16 from Josh Hennessy. Hennessy was it the right place at the top of the crease to redirect a shot from defenseman Erik Karlsson around goaltender Nic Riopel to give the B-Sens a 1-0 lead.
Everything unraveled for the Phantoms in the second period as the Senators rattled off four goals to take a 5-0 lead. Kaspars Daugavins doubled the B-Sens lead at 2:05 as he deflected a shot from the corner passed Riopel. Hennessy then scored his second goal of the night as he took the puck behind the net and scored on a wrap-around at 4:33. 59 seconds later it was 4-0 as defenseman Drew Bannister blasted a slap shot from the point off the inside of the right post and in at 5:32. After Bannister’s goal, Phantoms head coach Greg Gilbert replaced Riopel with backup goalie Johan Backlund, but the damage continued at 11:15 in bizarre fashion. Senators captain Denis Hamel scored Binghamton’s fifth goal from center ice on a soft shot that Backlund never saw, rolling underneath the Phantoms net minder. Several fights followed and it looked like Adirondack would get on the board, but starting goalie Andy Chiodo made an incredible save to rob defenseman Kevin Marshall of a wide open net rebound shot.

The Senators tacked on two more goals in the final period, beginning at 1:10 when Hamel scored his second on the night, slamming home a backside one-timer on a five-on-three power play for a 6-0 lead. Jim O’Brien capped off the scoring at 19:28 when he raced around the defenseman and slid a backhander into the net for the Senators seventh and final goal.
Andy Chiodo stopped all 34 shots he faced to record his first shutout of the season as the Senators improved to 10-8-2-1 on the year. Nic Riopel was tagged with the loss, allowing four goals on 20 shots in the first 25:32 of the game as Adirondack dropped to 8-8-1-0; Johan Backlund made 12 saves on 15 shots in relief over the final 34:28 of play. Binghamton out-shot the Phantoms 35-34 and went 2-for-6 on the power play; Adirondack was 0-for-5 with the man-advantage.
