MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Lowell Devils scored three goals in the first period and were able to hold on to edge the Manchester Monarchs, 3-2, on Saturday at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Ben Walter had a hand in all three Devils’ markers as he and linemates Matt Halischuk and Brad Snetsinger combined for one goal and six assists.
Olivier Magnan gave Lowell the 1-0 edge when Halischuk found him for a point shot that sailed past Jonathan Bernier at 7:43.
Halischuk was the benefactor four minutes later, one-timing Walter’s centering pass inside the far post for his second goal in three games.
Rob Davison then put the Devils up, 3-0, with 12.1 seconds left in the first when his long slapshot tipped off the inside of Bernier’s leg pad and trickled across the goal line. During the intermission, Bernier would be replaced by Jeff Zatkoff, who stopped all 13 shots he faced in relief.
Dave Meckler got Manchester on the board 1:44 into the second period when he took a drop pass at the far circle and beat Mike McKenna down low with a hard wrist shot.
The Monarchs were able to pull within one on a 6-on-4 power play which saw Gabe Gauthier fire a backhander from the slot that found the top right corner with 1:44 remaining.
McKenna would deny Manchester’s bid to tie the game in final minutes, finishing with 24 saves for his ninth win of the season.
