San Jose Sharks Make Five Picks on Final Draft Day
Monday, June 29, 2009 at 09:47AM SAN JOSE – The San Jose Sharks concluded the 2009 NHL Entry Draft today with Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson and Director of Scouting Tim Burke making five selections.
The Sharks came in to this year's NHL Draft with two second round selections and they used them both on Day Two. With their first pick at 43rd overall, acquired from the Buffalo Sabres in the Craig Rivet trade, San Jose took defensive defenseman William Wrenn from the United States National Development Team. Known as a physical, stay-at-home defenseman, Wrenn is scheduled to attend the University of Denver this fall. Wrenn captained the U.S. National U-18 Team to the Gold medal at the 2009 U-18 World Championships.
In 51 games with the USA U-18 team, he posted 14 points (three goals, 11 assists). In seven U-18 World Championship games, Wrenn posted three power play goals (3-0=3) and was a +5. The six-foot-one, 190 pound native of Anchorage was ranked 54th by Central Scouting Service among all North American skaters.
NHL Central Scouting's Gary Eggleston said Wrenn "plays a smart and steady game. He skates very well and has good mobility. He passes the puck quickly out of his own end. He backs up the play and his partner very well, and is a reliable stay-at-home defenseman. He plays the body very well and is a physical presence. He works very hard game in and game out and is consistent in his overall play. He is smart and poised and doesn't get rattled when pressured."
With the 57th overall selection, the Sharks took Taylor Doherty from the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League. The physical defenseman was ranked 58th overall by NHL's Central Scouting (94th by The Hockey News). In 68 games with Kingston in 2008-09, Doherty posted 20 points (two goals, 18 assists) and 140 penalty minutes, finishing fourth among Kingston defensemen in scoring. The hulking blueliner stands at six-foot seven and 218 pounds and was selected to participate in the 2009 CHL Top Prospects Game.
As a member of Team Canada he won a gold medal at the 2008 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament and participated in the 2009 Under-18 World Championships. Doherty was also on the Team Ontario that won a gold medal at the 2008 Under-17 World Hockey Challenge.
At the NHL's Scouting Combine in early June, he posted the third-highest score in anaerobic fitness peak power output, scored 1,918 in leg power peak (Sweden's Victor Hedman hit 1,706) and was first in hand-eye coordination.
In the fifth round, the Sharks selected center Philip Varone from the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League with the 147th overall pick. Varone notched 52 points (19 goals, 33 assists) in 58 games last season for sixth-best on the team and added 19 points (ten goals, nine assists) in 14 OHL playoff games. In Central Scouting's Mid-Term rankings, Varone sat at 90th overall but fell to 172nd in their Final Rankings.
The Sharks added an additional pick in this year's draft, obtaining a seventh round selection (189th overall) from the Dallas Stars in exchange for a sixth round selection in 2010. With the 189th overall selection, the Sharks chose center Marek Viedensky. Viedensky tallied 40 points (16 goals, 24 assists) in 59 games with Prince George of the WHL. He added two goals (2-0=2) in 4 WHL playoff games. He also played for Team Slovakia at the 2009 World Championships, where he had four assists (0-4=4) in seven games. In 2008, he posted six points (one goal, five assists) for Team Slovakia at the U-18 World Championships.
With their final selection, San Jose chose Dominik Bielke of Eisberlin of the German Elite League with the 207th selection in the seventh round. He spent most of the 2008-09 season with Eisberlin Jr. in Germany and played for Team Germany at the 2009 World Championships and the 2008 U-18 World Championships. He was ranked 134th overall by Central Scouting among European skaters.
